While aesthetic treatments may help you look and feel more attractive, they're so much more than a beauty treatment. Aesthetic injectables are classed as a medical treatment – on a very different level than those you'd have in a beauty salon.

Most aesthetic treatments involve procedures performed by trained medical practitioners – a nurse, doctor or dentist – often using prescribed pharmaceutical products. These procedures may carry potential risks, require medical evaluation, and involve patient consent – just like other medical treatments.

Patient vs Client

I'm sometimes asked why I use the term patient rather client: “how am I a patient if I'm not unwell?”

The term ‘patient' underscores the responsibility of healthcare professionals in delivering safe and effective aesthetic care.

Beauty vs Aesthetics

While I absolutely love pampering beauty treatments, that's not what my clinic is about. I'm coming at your face with a needle – and would not do so without the vast medical experience under my belt (25 years and counting). And you would not be in my chair if I didn't know exactly how to resolve any potential complications.

“I truly care about my patients' wellbeing and consider it an absolute honour to be entrusted with their faces. Watching someone's face light up as they see their results in a mirror – then walk away with their head held a little higher is so incredibly rewarding – and infectious!”

On a daily basis I make sure patients feel comfortable in my presence, experience, knowledge and expertise. They know I'm at the end of a phone if they have any concerns and available 24/7 in an emergency.

I take my responsibilities as a medical practitioner extremely seriously. Patient safety is my number one priority, which is why I feel so strongly that official industry regulation is urgently required. I'm delighted that the Department for Health and Social Care has announced the launch of an eight week consultation on a proposed licensing scheme for non-surgical cosmetic procedures in England – and hope this extends to Northern Ireland asap.

“While I love helping people feel good in their own skin and boost their confidence, I also perform medical procedures daily. That's a big deal: attention to detail is crucial and trust is everything.”
